This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

032-Stormwater Retention Pond Recovery Analysis

To design a stormwater retention pond, one of the analyses that engineers have to perform is the retention and recovery of polluted runoff water. The initial portion of stormwater runoff is typically directed to a retention pond and which contains the most polluted runoff water (the first flush). The polluted water must be fully retained within the retention pond for treatment and infiltration. This course will be limited to recovery analysis for dry retention ponds where the entire polluted water volume must be stored within the pond and then recovered by infiltration within a specified period of time.

The regulatory agencies generally establish the minimum criteria for recovery of the first flush volume, which is sometimes referred to as the pollution abatement volume. For a dry pond the designer must verify the pond's capacity to infiltrate the volume within a specified period of time. This course will present the analytical approach and the methodology to calculate the infiltration losses from a dry retention pond.

The problems on the test take quite awhile to do and there are two of them that you must make assumptions in order to solve them because not enough information is provided to do them as shown in the examples. You have to modify the time determination formula to solve two of the problems by making assumptions. I particularly did not care for that on the test. For small projects, determining the depth of the aquifer base elevation used in the calculations could be quite expensive. I have never used the aquifer base elevation in any recovery analyses and never knew any other engineer who did.

I cannot help it but agree with other reviewers. The worksheet/exam assumes that one 'gets it' that there is an alternate form of the dt equation (infiltration time) that does not use the storage coefficient (f). This is a serious flaw in the course - to the author: in these classes a course can get almost no stars if you 'accidentally' omit some material. Not impressed by this class

The material was very interesting and one will actually learn something with this course. That is the positive. The negative is, you better have the time to invest as this is not one you will breeze through because the test has solve problems with too many variables requiring endless calculations. Too academic for a CEU course. This one takes a ridiculous amount of time because the problems are very involved and the parameters are all so similar that unless you are used to them you will spend hours going back and forth trying to remember what was what. More like a university test than a CEU test. I applaud the materials and their usefulness. I was annoyed at the test problems.

This course should be of significant value. Unfortunately, the author cannot seem to figure put if he wants to make it an academic exercise or a practical course. Equation derivations are cryptic and variables are not properly defined. Organization is very poor and as a result it is impossible to complete the calculations required on the test without an investment of time far in excess of that required for the course. This is supposed to be a practical course for the use of practicing engineers or am I mistaken. Many more like this and I will be looking for another source of pdh's.

Input variables for formulas very poorly described and explained. f (storage coefficient for flows) is a good example. Because of this the problems (20-25)to be worked are frustrating to say the least. Likely a very easy course for someone knowledgeable of subject but likely to be a very frustrating course for someone without much prior knowledge of the subject.

I very much enjoyed this course and especially from the soil mechanics standpoint. The majority of my previous work with stormwater retention has focused around runoff design rather than infiltration and mounding. I was also impressed with the author's broad emphasis on the impact to local groundwater tables and recharge.

This course was extremely detailed and really covered the topic.

The only downside I could see is that some of the test problems didn't seem to follow the examples in the text.

The answers to some of the test questions were somewhat diffult to find in the course booklet. Especially question #20. Who can remember the "weighted average" formula? It wasn't in the course booklet! Test questions #21 to #25 were difficult to compare with the course booklet samples. And a comment on the course booklet material - the development of the equations as they relate to the sample was not clear and concise. The course booklet information seemed disjointed and sometimes lacked clarity. For engineers who just need PDH credits the information presented should be more concise with some simple and clear problem samples.

I am used to the given data being BELOW the stated question and therefore used the wrong data for the first few calculation questions before I realized my error. When I printed the test the lines in between the questions did not print and it was not until I logged back in to take the test that I saw the lines. If they had printed it would have saved me A LOT of time. I definitely earned at least four hours and a little more on this one through my own error though, but it was a good course for those rusty at designing infiltration ponds.
