This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

086-Introduction to Storm Sewer Design

This course explains in detail the basic principles of storm sewer design and is intended for design persons with little or no previous practical experience. It covers use of the Rational Method to determine peak flow rates from various sites and Manning's Equation to analyze open channel flow. Insight into the design process from the author's long career as a drainage engineering professional is woven into the fabric of the course.

Some worked examples and a detailed explanation of the spreadsheet would be useful improvements. I wasted a lot of time trying to see how to make practical use of the spreadsheet. There are three tabs. One of them appears to be spreadsheet doodling to figure out how to make the one named pipedata (2) which is, I believe, the lookup table used. The tab labeled Storm Tab looks like it could be useful if you can discover how to modify it for your particular need and know for sure that it is doing what you want. You can see the equations and see that they are very convoluted with relative and absolute cell addresses as well as trips to the lookup table. Before you try this one I recommend you take the two Manning formula courses (#150 and #080) which are excellent and have very useful spreadsheets.

Disagree with your answer for #11. In the assumptions for the question# 8 your author used highest Mannings n for RCP at ,013. Chart has range for HDP of .009-,015. Since the example used the highest n value for RCP, I assumed the highest n value for HDP. My answer was actually .... My bad on #14, error on calc for the hydraulic radius. Oh well, still passed but no stars!

I think there should have been more information provided as to the hydraulic radius of an open channel and an example problem of sizing a pipe to provide the same or greater conveyance of flow for the open channel. Also, I think there should have been more information provided on hydraulic gradients and a graphic display showing the hydraulic gradient as it followed a pipe network downstream.

Not an Introductory Course

I don't know if you can give an introduction to Storm Sewer Design in two hours but without an educational and practical background in Storm Sewer Design, I would have had a hard time understanding what the author was trying to achieve. For me personally I learn best by seeing examples and there were essentially none in the course. The Excel spread sheet was ambiguous and I never did figure out what the author was trying to accomplish with it. All in all I feel the course is incomplete in its attempt to be an introduction to storm sewer design.

This might be a useful course for a hydraulic engineer looking for pdh credit. However, it was of very little use to me.

I was led to believe that the spread sheets should be used to solve the problems. The spread sheets were not clear and a good explanation was not provided for use of the sheets. Example problems would have helped. I would not take this course again and certainly found the spread sheets of little value.

In addition, I failed to find the answer to some of the question in the provided material.

This topic covers a lot of ground. Unfortunately, because of the PDH time allotted, some of the finer points of storm sewer design have been greatly generalized.

Don't misunderstand, I would highly recommend this course. But, be prepared to pull out some other resources to gain more insight.

The spreadsheet is well done and provides a great starting point for design. One will find that certain cell values are just plugged-in and not obtained from calculation or logical functions. The supplemental look-up tables are VERY good. The course is worth it just for the spreadsheet.
