1. on page25 the q''s listed at each depth should be in pcf instead of psf because you are then multiplying by the soil depth to get psf
2. What is the purpose of calculating Imax it is not used anywhere?
3. is there a way to calculate the horizontal deflection of the helical ? That may control the design if the soil is too soft clay or loose sand
4. Page 34 when calculating the Max Moment which is at the point of zero shear why use .5f instead of just f which is the point of zero shear?
5 in the equation on page 24 for Qf, since the equation starts with the Sum of the quantity the dL should either not be there or should be 1.0 as shown on the example on page 25/26
6. if the non cohesive soil was inundated with water to the surface would you use something like 68 pcf for the soil weight in the equation?

This was a good course. I don't design helical piers but I do design the brackets from piers to foundations quite often. I also design pile caps but not the piles themselves. Excellent course, and a great review of Broms/Euler/Davisson equations and background, however my first introduction to helical anchors. The author did a great job in covering the many aspects of cohesionless and cohesive soils relating to the helical system. The technical material outline flowed throughout, making it easy to see the progression of all design parameters as well as the example problems. The test questions have a good representation of the reading material, and are straight forward, but thought provoking. This course has an excellent value, covering extensive material, and provides an in-depth "textbook" that provides confidence for the individual new to the design and analysis of helical systems. SUNCAM courses is the way to go for quality and real world applications by experienced authors.

Very good course. Have in your possession a scientific calculator that can do equations when you take the Test Worksheet. Go over the information and review the examples in the course materials very closely. I advise do not take the Final Test until you have fully completed the Worksheet. Then the Final Test is a breeze.
The test worksheet questions are identical to the final test.

Screw anchors for Quonset huts aginst typhoon winds
I found it intriguing that piles would be rated as to their ability to withstand horizontal loading. On reflection, even a tension pile anchoring a pole though a wire, will be subject to some horizontal loading UNLESS the wire is exactly along the axis of the pile.
Accepting that horizontal loads are probably the norm, I found it next to impossible to understand the Davisson or Broms methods of evaluating the pile requirements. Is the value of "e" to be in units of psf rather than the norm of psi? Even dividing my answers by 12 left me far from the correct answer.
And how do you evaluate the screw anchor against pull-out. Does the torque vs. capacity apply to tension as will as compression? I didn't see anything explicit for pull-out! I have in the past applied soil weight on the cylinder of soil removed for the anchor to pull out. But would like to know the industry usage.
I see screw anchors on every street corner. and many times between block corners. Always in tension to anchor telephone or power poles. This application is not addressed at all.

Course was informative and helpful. Test was fair except for the test question 24 that required solution of a cubic equation. That question turns it into a math test. Using the multiple choice options provided, the answer can be guessed by backing into it but perhaps that question can be revised somewhat to be more straightforward.

Formulae are illegible
Horrible. Formulae in the course material are illegible.
SunCam Response: After seeing the representative page that you forwarded we recognized the problem. The author used a font called "Cambria Math" to write his formulas. You do not have that font on your computer thus the little rectangle "stand-in" characters. We have reconfigured our PDF file generator to embed the various fonts into the file so that should not happen in the future.

Before this course I had no knowledge about designing helical piles. Though the course I am now able to understand and apply the principles. Some of the formulas are complicated, but understandable and the examples clearly show how to apply the concepts.

Interesting course, with many practical examples in the textbook.
It comes short however on completely detailing how to make the full design of an helical pile, which is what I was hoping to be able to do after completing this course. Being a bridge engineer, I need to know, when I make a design, how many piles will be required, for example, under a bridge abutment. However, it seems to me, from the textbook, that the only way to know the axial capacity of an helical pile is from the average installation torque. It is not very useful to know that when you need to estimate the cost of a bridge project prior to construction, which implies knowing how many piles will be needed based on the loads supported by a given foundation unit, be it in a bridge or a building or any other structure. This point should be included in the textbook in its next revision.

Basics of Helical Piles - so you don't get screwed
The course provides a good overview of the basic history and characteristics of helical piles and principles of soil mechanics. The discussion is relatively easy to follow although some of the examples were a little hard to follow.
I think some reference to commonly used design manuals or perhaps examples of manufacturer generated design templates would be useful.

Review: 132-Fundamentals of Helical Anchors/Piles
The description of the piles was good. This course needed additional information in the design calculations portion. It was very vague with some of the formulas and their use. I did not understand the design questions on the quiz compared to the design information in the text.

I think it is excellent in all respect. equation for g in page 34 is not very celar in regards to what the 0.5 exponent (square root) applies to. I t applies to the entire equation not to (2.25 x 0.719x)^0.5
SunCam Comment: The formula is correct and unambiguous as written. Matching the pairs of ( ) makes it clear that the exponent applies to the entire formula.

Big D or little d?
Maybe it's just me but in the equations the little d was used which you would expect to be in inches, but yet the big D which is in feet is what was required. By looking at the examples this became clear, but just looking at the equations you would come to the wrong conclusion. Or so it seems to me.

Best of the (3) SunCam seminars I've done. Very detailed, and useful information. Been using helical anchors based on mfgr's data for many years, but this gives the source of their data. Problems to be solved make this course a bit more difficult than some of the other SunCam courses - as it should be.

Easy course to read. Exam was straight forward except a few questions need calculations which was OK, but if you don't expect to be actually doing these calculations on the job, takes a little more concentrated effort. Overall, easy course to take and learn a bit along the way.

This course is an excellent overview of helical steel foundations, and covers their broad historical uses as well as the analysis methods used to calculate their capacities. I have always been weak in my understanding of foundations, so this course was perfect for expanding my knowledge base into new territory. Highly recommended for structural engineers who want to explore foundation solutions apart from the standard concrete methods.

Excellent Class
Helical Piles are an excellent method for deep foundations, especially when headroom clearances are limited or vibrations are not allowed. This is an excellent class to introduce the helical piles to engineers.

Very well written course, I red the material once and took the exam and got 100%...."Great success" you'll need a calculator for some of the exam questions (if you want to score 100%) however for passing grade of 70%, you don't need a calculator. another fantastic course from SunCam, thank you Pat and SunCam
