Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

252-Fundamentals of Foundation Design

This course covers the fundamentals of Foundation Design. This course is a good introductory course for engineers who wish to review the principles of foundation design and is a good refresher for experienced engineers. The course gives a background on soil mechanics and the design of shallow foundations. You will learn about bearing pressures, design of wall footings, design of an axially loaded two-way footing, bearing pressure under eccentrically loaded footings and basic reinforcing design for footings.

By successfully completing this course, you should be comfortable performing preliminary calculations for shallow foundations and footing design.

A good review. Requires the material be read and understood to complete the exam - just what continuing ed is supposed to be.

This course is a worthwhile introduction to a very extensive topic and covers the basics well. I have had some experience with foundations, but never in a rigorous setting. This course gave me a solid understanding of the basic principles of how soils behave and provided me with the groundwork to learn about the more advanced topics in the field. If I could have changed one thing about the course, it is that the focus of the test was too heavily weighted to qualitative discussion without enough quantitative analysis. I hope Mr Watson makes a follow-up to this course that delves more deeply into the calculations of foundations under a variety of loads. This course is highly recommended for structural engineers whose experience is lacking in subgrade analysis or for non-structural engineers who wish to get a remedial understanding of soils and simple foundations.

As a non-structural engineer, who is not familiar with some of the symbology and equations used in the analysis, it was very difficult to follow some of the calculation examples presented. Also, when equations that use factors are given in determining soil pressures, and the text does not explain otherwise it is somewhat misleading. This course could have covered less material (not including eccentric loading for example), and allowed for a more full explanation of the fundamentals.

Some examples can be hard to follow if you are not familiar with the nomenclature. This is a good refresher for those working in this field of engineering. Those not familiar with foundation design will take longer to complete the course

This course was exactly what I wanted. Watson covers gross and net soil pressure before treating spread footings for a wall and a column. The worked examples set you up for the typical reinforced concrete foundation. As noted though, this course does not cover the transfer of load from the structure to the footing. That's a subject for a different day. I'm waiting patiently. I kept the 5th star because I felt I should have been forced to work an actual problem.

Decent class covering the basics. Could use better discussion of the topics while working through the example problems presented in the material. Three of the exam questions were different than the test printout, which provided opportunities for mistakes and missing the exam questions.

I enjoyed the course, but I believe I found errors. Hopefully, these will get addressed. I did have to spend some time figuring out where some numbers come from in the calculations. I am fairly familiar with this, but someone who is not might have a hard time. Page 16 - Net Soil pressure should be 4.36 kips/ft^2 Page 16 - The soil pressure is calculated as 6.4 k/ft^2. In the calculation of Mu, the FORCE applied to the middle of the critical section of the footing should be (6.4 kips/ft^2)(1.5 ft)(1 ft slice of the foundation). I believe you are showing (6.4 k/lin.ft) divided by the 4ft^2 bottom surface area to get a unit pressure. The affects the remainder of the calculations in the example. Question 15 - I believe the question should specify that you are looking for one-way shear. Based on the questions leading up to it and working through the material I thought you were looking for punching shear. Question 16 - I had to assume the concrete strength of 3000 psi to get the right answer. I don't see it in the given data in questions 15 and 16. Page 28 refers to Table 21.2.1 and it is not in the course material.

The course material is extremely unclear, presented in a very complicated manner, examples lack clarity, there are numerous errors in the course material and some of the answers appear to be incorrect. Instead of pretending to be so smart the writer should focus on explaining where he obtained all the random numbers in his calculations, how he arrived at those numbers and present clearer formulas. Worst course ever taken. There were obvious mistakes in the version that I downloaded and apparently the writer changed many of his questions and answers as a result of errors but did not provide that information to the persons that purchased the course earlier. At the very least an e-mail should have gone out or the course number have a revision date. Her should check Q11. The correct answer to Q31 is not found on page 31 as indicated on the test results. The correct answer to Q7 is not found on page 14 as indicated but page 8 and then according to page 8 the answer should be . . . and on and on.The correct answer to Q12 is not found on page 26. This course should be removed from the list until it is checked and corrected and clarified. Q19 answer is not on page 31.
Portions of the review have been removed because they disclosed the correct answer to a question.
For the record, this course has been well rated by other customers. It has been completed successfully by 126 engineers and half of those scored 90% or better. This test has been recently revised as you point-out. Based on your comments, it will likely be revised again.

It is a good course, however the following could help: 1. Page 28 refers to Table 21.2.1, There is no table identified as this in the course material. 2. The author assumes that all people taking the course understands the equation symbols. It would help if he had a table early on that explained the meaning of the symbol and the dimensions used. Example ft-lbs, lbs/square foot, lbs/cu ft.....etc. Thank you.
