This was a challenging course. It required a good understanding of statics and background in structural concrete. I worked through the example but did not fully understand where all the numbers came from. I would like a little better reference to how the equations were developed. None the less I learned much from the course. I could not design complex pilings after taking the course but I now understand the basics and could talk intelligently to a colleague about design criteria.

The course was thorough, but there were some 'magic numbers' in the calculations. Magic numbers are numbers that appear and do not have an obvious source. Specifically, page 15 shows a value of 117.3 KIPS, but it is entirely unclear where this number came from. Page 16 calculating Ru shows 293.3 for the piling loads (known) and 12,000 with no apparent provenance - perhaps this is from the bearing support for hard rock in table 401.4.1?? Pages 21-23 refer to parameters b1, b2 and b0. These parameters are eventually defined, but defining them earlier would help in the understanding of the geometry that goes into the equations. Page 26 states that the value for b0 for the corner pile is 55 in - a calculation would be helpful.

A great refresher in Pile Foundation design! The topic thoroughly discussed the design part and the notes are very easy to follow. Although, I am expecting a section that tells something about the application of piles relative to the type of soil, the bearing strata where the pile should sit, the depth that needs to be neglected when you have expansive soil or things to look at when considering pile foundation, etc. But this might be more of geotechnical design consideration.
Overall the course is great. I recommend the course

Pile cap design combines parts from various parts of the code as well as the CRSI manual, and not many foundation courses teach it like this. This course puts all the details in a concise format. Great course!
