Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

013-Vibration - Modal Analysis

This 4-hour continuing education course provides an introduction to modal analysis, the study of the dynamic properties of structures under vibrational excitation. Modal analysis may be applied to describe and model the vibrational behavior of complicated structures such as automobiles, aircraft, or spacecraft, but is equally important for simpler equipment including golf clubs, fans, and washing machines. Regardless of the object's size, shape, or function, the vibration behavior may be characterized by terms such as natural frequency, mode shape, and frequency response function. A primary objective of this course is to explore these concepts in detail.

The course begins with a review of the fundamentals of single and two degree of freedom free and forced vibrations. Through this review, the notation conventions for a description of modal analysis are established. This provides the necessary basis for describing frequency response function measurement and model development. The lesson concludes with a summary of measurement equipment and techniques.

I found this course very helpful. Good explanation of theory with just the right amount of math. Good examples to demonstrate the theory. Great overview.

Excellent course: very thorough with clear examples to help digest the math. It was very effective to develop the material around the 2 DOF spring mass damper model. Thank you.

This course covers a complex topic that can be difficult to follow for those who haven't been working on this level in a while. If you can avoid getting absorbed in the math, the message is still there and its a bit easier to read.

Kicked my rear end but I remembered the materials from 47 years ago. Great job handling this material - highly recommended.

1) This is the toughest course I have taken in many years. When I read another review suggesting this was tough, I took the challenge to do the course. 2) This will not be a rewarding experience for Professional Engineers needed PDH's within a short time frame. 3) The course re-introduced me to matrix and linear algebra. About sixty percent of the way through the material a "light came on" and the connection with real data and complex number math became clear. The last 40% of the course went quickly. 4) Memories of university Differential Equation and Linear Algebra courses highlight that I should have paid more attention to what was being taught while in school. Thank you, Dr. Schmitz, for putting together a truly "professional development" course.

This course provides a solid foundation for modal analysis.

I worked through all the math and got a better understanding of curve fitting.

This was a very good course on modal analysis. It gave the fundamentals for modal analysis and provides the background for FEA-based solutions. I have always had a hard time understanding modal coordinates but it was well presented in this course.

The course is not a "basics" course but more like one taught in an engineering university. If vibrations is a person's forte, they will enjoy it: if not it will be both too long and detailed.

Good technical foundation to understand transform to frequency domain. Would like to see more on practical application and tools (perhaps a second course). Quiz complements material nicely - answering requires enough re-reading to reinforce key concepts.
