This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

This is a Spotlight Course of the Week (Expires: 1/25/2019)
030-How Your Projects Will Go Wrong - Streaming Video Course

Most projects fail to meet their cost and schedule objectives and only a small fraction achieve full success. This course offers practical advice and suggestions on how to recognize the warning signs that your project may be on the wrong path and what you can do to alleviate the problems. Just as the old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" remains valid, the key to fixing project problems is through early recognition and effective solutions.

How Your Projects Will Go Wrong is the third in a series of project management courses offered by SunCam and Dr. Jeffrey Pinto of Penn State University.

Course Topics and Timeline:

  • 0:10:00 Introduction
  • 0:10:00 Causes of Project Failure
  • 0:18:00 Poor leadership
  • 0:31:00 Setting ourselves up to fail
  • 1:00:00 Poor knowledge of Project Status
  • 0:21:00 Ineffective solutions
  • 0:33:00 10 Ways to ruin your project
  • 0:08:00 Unwillingness to learn
  • 0:05:00 Conclusions
  • 0:10:00 Time allowance for test
  • 3:26:00 Total Contact Time
  • 3:20:00 Contact time required for 4-PDH

Learning Objectives:

The learning objectives of this continuing education course are to give attendees a better understanding of major reason why projects fail, including:

  • Poor leadership
  • Setting ourselves up to fail
  • Poor knowledge of project status
  • Ineffective "solutions"
  • The unwillingness to learn the correct lessons

Some portions of the project tracking and Earned Value were hard to follow mainly due to the examples presented on the screen moved too quickly-I finally made friends with it by freeze-framing the information.

I really enjoyed this course and saw a lot of value in it. Although now retired I had over 40 years experience in engineering, most of it in project management. During that time I made almost every mistake and misstep discussed in the presentation. I wish I had seen this presentation 20 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of pain; and I intend to recommend it to my former associates who are still active in project management.

Well presented, with good mix of real live examples referenced. Just found some of his black/white example, particularly related to overtime not being effective. Depends is not just a delay tactic, it is a good drill down point. Also found statements like "no real difference between 20% and 70%" a bit surprising. I get it, just trying to make point, but huge cost and schedule implications glossed over.

For such a long presentation, Dr. Pinto kept the topic engaging, and made the subject interesting. The course is a great introduction to the pitfalls of project management, and is very informative. The course is well planned with the video corresponding nicely to the order of test questions, and the questions are just challenging enough (they make you pay attention).

Concept of streaming video teaching on my schedule was refreshing. Instructor had great delivery, not boring, learned about the CPI/SPI metrics which I was unaware of. Enjoy SunCam's way of doing a package from the video to the test. Doesn't get any easier than this to keep up my PDH requirements to keep my P.E. current.

Excellent examples, scenarios and real-life descriptions.

"People are really like that...."

Very good underscoring about why various points are important to make or break a project. Good indication that projects may be evaluated differently for different reasons and that projects are "salvageable" for most of their span of time, if the break-down patterns are recognized and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Instructor is very knowledgeable, delivers the material well and is interesting. Suggest he add material showing how to evaluate project performance. Contrasting three projects, one badly done, one done okay and a third done particularly well would also be helpful and could be tied in with how to evaluate projects. Better yet make it another 4 CEU short course to complement the other three! Above all, keep it practical but research based.

The course was well presented and really hit home. I was not surprised that putting in overtime to make up time in a project phase (plans production), doesn't work well. I generally start work on future phases early, though, as a standard practice to try to make up time, or to accelerate a schedule.
