Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering and to familiarize the professional engineer with the use of the Hazen & Williams Formula and the SunCam Hydro-Calc tool.

Course Description

050-Water Flow in Pipes - The Hazen-Williams Formula

This is an introductory course that uses sample problems to demonstrate the use of Hazen-Williams Formula for answering the day to day hydraulics questions that confront engineers. To complete the course, (after purchase) you will download your FREE copy of "SunCam Hydro-Calc" software product for solving Hazen-Williams Formula problems that runs on Microsoft Excel®.

The objective of the course is to give engineers the ability to use the information that they know about a problem to solve for the things that they do not know. This course will provide useful skills, knowledge and insights for civil, sanitary, mechanical and engineers of all disciplines.

Great way to solve piping designs! excellent examples! The definition of Hydraulic Radius is a question. Do you use area/wetted perimeter or 4 times the area/wetted perimeter? The definition I'm used to using results in the Hydraulic Radius being equal to the Radius of a round pipe flowing full. The answer to question #9 is not consistent with this as the answer there is . . . Also, on Page 28, the wrong inputs have been used. 66 inches should have been an input for pipe diameter in the computer program rather than 180 cubic feet per second for the flow.
"R" is the hydraulic radius, not the radius of the pipe. I have added some intermediate derivation steps to help clarify. <"The definition I'm used to using results in the Hydraulic Radius being equal to the Radius of a round pipe flowing full. "> You have simply been using the wrong definition. The hydraulic radius of a pipe flowing full is HALF the radius of the pipe. Portions of the review comments were deleted because they reveal the correct answer to a test question. The problem on page 28 was that I inserted the wrong screen-shot. I have now fixed it. Glad to see that you are paying attention and keeping the instructor honest.

Outstanding practical application for pipes flowing full. My congratulations to the author for making the effort to relate the course material to real world applications. The word problems are excellent because they frame a problem and lead the student to think a bit about how the H-W can be used to solve. The test goes another step and helped me learn even more about practical applications. And finally, the well engineered spreadsheet is a work of art - one of the most practical tools I've ever seen.

This was an excellent course. It was designed to use the included software to reduce repetitive calculations, but still required use of many basic flow principles to complete. The course used increasingly more complex problems, and led the user through the process of solving them. Examples were similar to what an engineer might really encounter in the field.

This was just an excellent course. I really liked the technique of teaching the course by examples, and I found the examples to be very interesting. I especially liked the fact the examples seemed so down to earth. The test was challenging, but fair. Some of the questions went beyond what was taught in the course, but those questions were manageable. The hint on the one question did help.

The course provides a very useful approach to using the H&W formula for analyzing flow in pipes. The spreadsheet 'program' is very useful for calculating the various variables in the hydraulic analysis.
The high degree of precision is not realistic as an engineering analysis, and the 'perfect' answers to the various questions/problems. Many times the responses were to 4 significant figures when one or two of the input variables were only to 2 significant figures. As engineers, we are faced with accepting the idea that our analyses are good approximations and their is uncertainty in our work. In addition, the lack of discussion about minor losses is a significant omission when considering some of the fire flow lines. The additional valves and other fittings/entrances/exits could add noticeable headless, which should be accounted for. These impacts should at least be discussed.
We agree that the engineer should be mindful of significant figures when analyzing the output data from the spreadsheet program but the number of decimal points cannot be preset by the software. You will need to set your installation of Excel to the number of significant figures that you deem appropriate. As for the head-loss through valves and fittings, the point is well taken. We should have mentioned that those can be conveniently handled by reducing everything to an equivalent length of straight pipe.

I am a P.E. with over 30 years involved with design and analysis of drainage and pressure pipes. I chose this course in order to see what advances had taken place with the techniques and methodology since the early years of my career. I was very impressed with the Hydro-Calc program and the savings in time and the laborious calculations I had become used during my pre-computer years. I plan on using this on all applicable projects in the future. The course was well organized and presented.

A little more basic explanation of psi divided by length (first time I have ever seen it) combining rise over run and pressure I feel was needed- maybe 4 or 5 pages - should have been before the too many example problems. Any one can plug numbers, but the results in area of psi/feet and such was unspecified. The problems in the exam where real good - more example problems with only 2 or 3 answers to follow was nice - unlike another test in pipes and flows where only 3 examples encompassed the entire test.

Excellent. This is what a PDH course should be. The Excel tool is very nice by itself. But what makes this course so effective is you have to read and understand the examples to make effective use of the tool and complete the test. It's been awhile since I performed calculations like these. It was an excellent refresher.

Interesting and useful spreadsheet for quick approximations on pressure pipe parameters. I've been doing these calculations longhand for most all my career. Hope it instills use and understanding of the basic formula with the younger Engineers who rely too heavily on the multi-node programs of today with little thought to what is occurring in the individual lines.

The excel program is quite clever.

It would be nice to have an unprotected version to merge with some other work I am doing.

I suggest puting the equations and logic up front and review them first, before jumping into the spreadsheet.

While the information was good and relevant, the majority of the course document was example questions. Explanations of the example questions were limited to what to input into the software, not how the inputs were determined. Additional explanation would add value to the course. This course is more a "how to" of the software, not a overview of water flow in pipes. Decent value at $19.95 but I certainly wouldn't pay any more for this course.

I just successfully completed this fine course. However, I could not find any link or otherwise get the free hydraulic calculation software. Not to worry, I had an old copy of V1.1 Hydro-Calc on my computer and it worked fine.

Suggest you explain that there is considerable judgment that needs to be exercised in selection of the roughness variable = C. For example, FDEP regulation requires that for force mains constructed from smooth pipe, such as PVC and Polyethylene and lined Ductile Iron the C factor should not exceed C= 120 per Recommended Standards for Wastewater Facilities (1997). However, at startup, these smooth pipes exhibit much higher C factors of as much as 150. Care must be exercised when selecting the C factor to insure connected pumps do not runout on the right side of the selected pump and impellor combination. I have made a pretty good living correcting oversized pumps impellor/undersized motors due to improper use of the overly conservative C factor.

Excellent point about the careful selection of C factors. That's what makes this an engineering problem and not just math.

I do not agree with your answer to question 9. since you do not state that the pipe is flowing full, there is not enough info to solve the problem. thought you would like to know.....

Author response: Hazen-Williams is not the preferred formula for solving partially full pipes so it did not occur to me to specify a full pipe. Still, adding "flowing full" to the question removes an ambiguity so I have made the modification. Thanks for the suggestion!

the examples were pretty good, but there were a few "c" usage errors - you routinely said use 140 for PVC which is wrong. also, some of the problems didnt fully represent real world situations. they were pretty good though, thanks.

Very useful spreadsheet. I will be using this for piping pressure drop calculations in building systems (domestic/hydronic). It will be especially useful for renovation projects, to quantify constraints of existing piping/systems, wherein only a few measurable pieces of information may be obtained and other governing criteria may be assumed based on era of construction. The course document provided good examples that illustrated the interactivity of parameters of water flow. Appreciated the disclaimers regarding judicious use.

I thought this was an excellent course. I am not a civil engineer, but with the Hydro-Calc program I believe I could handle almost any flow problem I would encounter. The program is simple, easy to use and gives instantaneous results.
