Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

173-Interior Lighting Design The Fundamentals

This course will aid architects, engineers, interior designers and anyone involved in the design of lighting systems. It begins with the basics of light and color, and progresses into the anatomy of the eye and how humans are able to see images.

The course focuses primarily on fluorescent linear lighting, typical in most commercial buildings, and the correct selection of lamps and ballasts to meet Owner requirements and energy codes. A systematic calculation using the Zonal Cavity Method applies all of the concepts discussed in the course. Also addressed in the course is how scotopically enhanced lighting affects the lighting calculations. The course ends with a checklist of items to investigate to avoid some of the problems that could be inherent in the lighting design.

I liked the concentration on the biology of the eye. In technical courses this sort of thing is usually neglected and it matters.

Good definition of terms and introduction to the topic. Some of the charts were hard to read w/o extra lighting and a magnifier, but the information was well and logically presented. I will be preparing a summary of acronyms for future use. Many were used. Excellent story problem presentation. Fine tuning the design to meet many requirements is where your creativity shines.

Great course! Learned a lot about lighting and it's affect on design. Never took into account the different types of fluorescent lamps. I didn't even know they existed. Would recommend this course to any lighting designer.

Great course.

However, I believe a first course, that would be much more relevant to a mechanical HVAC engineer would be: "Interior Electrical Power Distribution design for Commercial Buildings", detailing the procedure to develop power riser diagrams, panel schedules, electrical power wiring to equipment and lights, development of lighting schedules, the codes involved in the design and the calculations involved; in a simple format for mechanical engineers to use to properly interpret electrical drawings when performing HVAC analysis.

In fact, any course that will allow some sort of crossover between disciplines would be more helpful. Examples would be: courses in structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection design, etc. for mechanical engineers OR; structural, Mechanical, plumbing, fire protection design course for electrical engineers and so on.
