Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

117-Mechanically Stabilized Earth Structures - Part 3

The mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall course provides an introductory lesson addressing the basics of MSE wall design. The course, which has been separated into three parts, covers the following topics:

  • Part 1 - History or MSE Structures (ancient and modern).
  • Part 1 - Industry Design Methods and Programs.
  • Part 1 - Segmental Block and Reinforcement Products.
  • Part 2 - Failure Modes.
  • Part 2 - Civil Design Considerations.
  • Part 2 - Geotechnical Engineering Considerations and Soils Testing.
  • Part 2 - Why Do MSE Walls Fail?
  • Part 3 - Detailed hand calculation.

The course is geared toward engineers who practice in the civil, geotechnical, surveying and structural disciplines.

The course was practical and I believe I learned something that could help me in my work. There was one mistake on the test, I believe it is question 15. . . . Also the text and test not 100% consistent calling the "Overturning Moment " a "Driving Moment".
The reviewer disagrees with the correct answer to question #15. A portion of the review comments were removed because they address the correct answers to questions. The term "Overturning Moment" is used in the course, the term "Driving Moment" is not used.

Good value for the money. The problems solving with equations part was a bit cumbersome.

Very educational for introduction to MSE wall design and calculations. I found a few typos in the equations that I had to research to find correct formula but explanations were very clear and precise.

117 MSE Walls Part 3 is a (necessary) practical exercise to ensure that student is familiar with implementation of principles. As structured, it ensures that the student can step through a problem, understanding inputs and results.

The calculation exercise was helpful. Some explanations of the rationale for taking certain steps (for example removing one of the three parts of the bearing capacity calculation) would add value.

This is not a course! It is a directed plug 'n' chug exercise involving some 40+ formulas plus most "test" questions tell you what formula number to use!!! An exercise in tedium! Many typos in study guide and test, missing nomenclature and definitions, mixed terms and subscripts made this somewhat of a bear to wade thru. There appear to be some units consistency problems in some of the formulas. Having said this it was interesting to see that there is a much greater level of complexity involved in designing a MSE wall than is apparent in courses 1 & 2. In fact it was just this that made the angst of dealing with the study guide shortcomings worthwhile. I wonder just how stable these MSE walls are in areas where they are subjected to numerous frequent smallish earthquakes resulting from fracking. I see no mention of design to withstand earthquake loads or considerations given to fluidization of the wall fill material that could result from earthquakes.

Problems are easy to follow but in some places the units don't appear to agree.
