Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

116-Mechanically Stabilized Earth Structures - Part 2

The mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall course provides an introductory lesson addressing the basics of MSE wall design. The course, which has been separated into three parts, covers the following topics:

  • Part 1 - History or MSE Structures (ancient and modern).
  • Part 1 - Industry Design Methods and Programs.
  • Part 1 - Segmental Block and Reinforcement Products.
  • Part 2 - Failure Modes.
  • Part 2 - Civil Design Considerations.
  • Part 2 - Geotechnical Engineering Considerations and Soils Testing.
  • Part 2 - Why Do MSE Walls Fail?
  • Part 3 - Detailed hand calculation.

The course is geared toward engineers who practice in the civil, geotechnical, surveying and structural disciplines.

The course content was generally good, but there were a few omissions. No mention was made of the bottom reinforcement layer in the discussion on internal sliding. The illustration showing the angle of the internal failure plane was ambiguous. The angle is above the horizontal, which could be illustrated with an arc and arrow instead of just an arrow. As in Course 115, there were numerous typos that did not affect but just indicated lack of a good proof-reader.

The author knows his subject, well. And is clearly passionate about it. Along with Part 1, among the best pdh courses I've taken.

Like most courses i have taken from Suncam, this one goes into just the right amount of overview and detail. It presents a good overview of all that enters into designing a MSE wall, while realizing the intent is not to try and present an entire college course. Only negative comment is that author allows some personal bias to enter into some statements on things such as responsibility, quality of software, etc.

A direct continuation of the first. Many good fundamentals. No calculations - a shortcoming. Evidently, Part 3 is where the calcs are. I have yet to take that part.

... More knowledge could be attained if dign examples were a part of the course. Other wise good course.

SunCam Comment: The Part 3 Course is all design examples. Portions of the reviewer's comments were removed because they reveled correct answers to questions.

Again, this course pulls together some very specific and valuable information that would be difficult and time-consuming to find elsewhere.

One question about the course document:

On page 9 of 25, first paragraph. "This distance is typically equal to or greater than twice the height of the lowest wall and the lowest wall the tallest." My question is that, in the 2 graphics below, the setback distance is equal to the height of the lower wall, not twice that length. Also, it might be clearer to say "...with the lowest wall being tallest."

The course was great. The drawings and photos are also good. It would help to provide more sketches/drawings to expalin some of the terminology and show limitations or reference.
