Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

122-Solar Basics - Radiation Data Online

Whether you are planning/designing a photovoltaic solar power system, a passive solar heating system or solar collectors for a solar thermal system to provide space heat or hot water, you could use data on the average rate of solar radiation to be expected at your project location each month. In fact, such information is readily available from online sources for locations in the United States and around the world. This course will provide information about three sources of such data. Two of the sources are from the Renewable Resource Data Center (RREDC), which is a unit of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The other source is a NASA Langley Distributed Active Archive (DAAC) Surface Meteorology and Solar Energy Data Set. Discussion of each of these sources will include how to access them, what type of data is available at each, and how to interpret that data.

This course is intended for mechanical, electrical, chemical and energy engineers, and architects. It will also be of interest to any engineers wanting to learn more about the renewable energy field and to professional surveyors who are responsible for the accurate orientation and layout of solar collection devices.

The overall objective of this course is to prepare those completing the course to access the three online sources of solar radiation data that are presented and discussed in the course. A more detailed list of learning objectives is included in the course document.

I think the material was too broad, too shallow to be of much use. A better 4 hr course would be solar panels, but deeper, with thermal efficiency of windows ( and maybe, wall systems) as a second 4 hr block. I don't mean to be critical, but are we trying to learn something, or just to get past a re-licensing obstacle?

Course covers how to obtain radiation data from NREL and NASA, as well as guidelines on how to interpret it. Emphasizes looking up data on tables, which can be dry at times, but that is inherent in the topic.

It appears this "course" is just a random collection of notes, packaged and presented as an educational course. As a college professor, I am certain that my college would never accept this type of material from me. I am disappointed that Suncam allowed this to be part of their course offerings.

Course is overall good in information and web site locations.

Problems could be presented in a less confusing way to help you figure out the connection between the tables and the way information is calculated from it.

1-How about a BOLD Tiltle showing either NREL or NASA on the enclosed data sheets from those respective sources.

2-The reference on test sheet to page 22, 35 should read 23,35 (the way my copy printed; and 29, 31, 36 should read 30, 31, 36?

3- I'd like to know which questions I missed also

Not an "easy" course (!) This course required some digging into the various charts. I found it a little tedious, esp. Q # 20, but I took the necessary time and finally worked everything out & achieved a perfect score. That was a good feeling! This course was definitely worth it. I learned a lot.--Thanks !

The NASA Langley site is not too intuitive. It was difficult trying to determine the answer to queston #21. I originally had it correct but I changed it based on the latitude and longitude directions given on the Colorado and Iowa tables. Specifically both of those tables said the North and West directions are positive.
