Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

126-Open Channel Flow Measurement - Weirs and Flumes

Measuring the flow rate of water in an open channel typically involves some type of obstruction in the path of flow. The two major categories of open channel flow measurement devices in this course are the weir and the flume. A weir is a vertical obstruction that the water must flow over. The measured height of water above the top of the weir (the weir crest) can be used to calculate the flow rate. A flume consists of a constriction in the cross-sectional area of flow. The measured height of water passing through the constricted area (the throat of the flume) can be used to calculate the water flow rate. This course included descriptions, equations and example calculations for sharp crested (V-notch and rectangular weirs), broad crested weirs, and Parshall flumes. A spreadsheet to assist with rectangular weir calculations is included with the course.

This course is intended for hydrologists, civil engineers, hydraulic engineers, highway engineers and environmental engineers. Professional surveyors who are engaged in the layout/verification of weir and flume construction and in the collection of data for use in flow calculations will also benefit from this course.

The overall objective of this course is to provide the attendees with knowledge about calculations and installation and measurement guidelines for sharp crested weirs, broad crested weirs, and Parshall flumes, and to prepare those completing the course to make flow rate calculations for these types of open channel flow meters. Majority of the presentation had direct relationship to the Test of Record but Question 18. Test for Record Question 18 is not even similar to review test question 18. Test question 18 in both cases concerned Broad Crest Weir but to solve the question require using the formula for Contracted Weir.

Cannot figure out question 18. the test choices are radically different from worksheet. and using the formula quoted the answer is . . . . Very confusing! Other differences between the course text and the excel sheets were noted

Very descriptive. Author uses a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of weir and flume design to give a detailed breakdown of when to specify a given measurement device. I found this course helpful.

There were two typographical errors on Page 20. At the top of the page, Equation (14) should be Equation (15). Also, the reference back to Equation(7) on Page 12 doesn't match the Equation(7) shown on Page 20. Otherwise, this was an excellent course with a thorough test. The material will be useful to me in my current work environment. Thank you.

I thought the course was very helpful. I had previously done a limited amount of weir and flume work but this couse really expanded my knowledge. The only comment I would have is that there were some typos in the section on rectangular weirs involving the correction factors kb and kh. One was -0.0003 and the other was 0.003. Kh seemeed to fluctuate from positive to negative and from 0.003 to 0.0003. I would suggest looking at every place it was used to make sure all are consistent. I think that the problem arose becuase the kb and kh values were similar. Otherwise, great course!

I enjoyed the course content, and find the information quite useful. I am accustomed to occasionally starting from scratch to evaluate weirs and flumes using reference texts from my college years; and hand calculating the results, sometimes using a range of possible of variables and alternate methods, to arrive at a confidence factor for the results. The tools of this course make that a little easier. (however, I am "old school" and check everything by direct calculation.
