Course Objective

This continuing education course is written specifically for professional engineers with the objective of relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering.

Course Description

This is a Spotlight Course of the Week (Expires: 1/25/2019)
181-Introduction to Small-Scale Wind Project Design

This course covers the fundamentals of Wind Power technology, providing a practical "quick study" to those who need to (or desire to) become knowledgeable on this topic. Professional Engineers often find that they themselves need to "get real smart, real quick" on wind power, since it is not unusual that they are often the first to be asked by a client or employer to assess if more energy, time, or money should be devoted to investigating the feasibility of a proposed wind project.

By successfully completing this course, you should be comfortable performing fundamental wind energy projections with the sparse and incomplete data often available during preliminary project discussions, as well as become cognizant of pit-falls and show-stoppers that plague initial forays into this field. The goal is to equip the student so he or she will be able to provide a technically-sound reply when asked if a proposed wind power project warrants further evaluation at some additional effort or expense.

This course (#181) is hands-down the best course I have taken from ANY vendor in at least 10 years of using online courses. Strengths: perfect introductory level (I am transportation engineer); provides "quick and dirty" estimate methods, well written, conversational; exceptional graphics; sample calculations.

Fun quick course. Typos in the text require correction. Good course to provide to high schoolers and college students interested in this type of stuff. Provide a little more data on VAWT and traditional dutch windmills are not drag mills. At least a century ago they were fitted with aero leading edges that made them (imperfect) lift mill. Sail design and wind mill design are actually parallel developments.

My interest in this course was not only for CE credits, but also for the purpose of evaluating the potential of installing a small wind turbine on a portion of my own property. Not only did this course give me the how's and why's I needed to make this evaluation, but also gave me reference information to help find additional and more detailed info. The mathematical equations used were simple to follow but complex enough to give useful results.

Very good summary of the various turbines and the equations behind them, along with a couple of case studies to apply this information to a hypothetical project. The only thing I would have liked to see is a discussion of the capital cost - the cases show estimated power production and expected revenue, so an example of how that compares to the initial project cost would be interesting
