COURSE OBJECTIVEAlthough many can benefit, three specific groups are targeted with the following goals.
• Provide a practicing Professional Engineer (PE) with the information or refresher on nuclear theory and provide for the engineer assigned to a related job with the minimum knowledge to properly evaluate the design and testing of a system.
• Provide a practicing Engineer with the requisite knowledge to adequately review and analyze designs and testing for compliance with goals and requirements.
• Provide a licensed Electrician with an understanding to be able to assess impacts on systems for installation or design changes, and proper safe operation.
In particular, Nuclear engineers updating the knowledge needed for their profession will find this course directly suited to their needs. Nuclear plant operators or technicians will recognize the problems in this course are written using civilian nuclear plant information. Regulation problems reference Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines. Further, the problems reflect what you need to know (or be able to understand with minimal study) in order to perform your job competently. The entire course can be used in training sessions designed to review all or some of general areas covered, with individual problems providing topics of discussion.
Focus will be on the basics of knowledge given that truly understanding the basics helps in maintaining necessary skills along with the ability to accomplish tasks competently and confidently.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is meant as a compendium of the nuclear engineering field topics in the table of contents. This is admittedly an ambitious goal. However, a thorough study of the problem statements and solutions, along with the supplemental equations, terms, diagrams, tables, recommended references, will expose you to many aspects of nuclear engineering, providing a broad overview of the field. Because of this, the course can serve a number of purposes, allowing tailored reviews of differing depths and focuses.
This course focuses on the knowledge a
Nuclear Plant Operator should have: Atomic & Nuclear Physics / Radiation / Effects & Protection / Shielding.
Questions, with solutions, on a more advance (yet concise format) may be found in the author’s book:
Nuclear Engineering Solved Problems. Belmont, CA: Professional Publication Inc. (Located online at www.ppi2pass.com.)
NOTE
Access to any basic theory book (see the References) is helpful but is not required for completion of the course(s).
