COURSE OBJECTIVEAlthough many can benefit, three specific groups are targeted with the following goals.
• Provide a practicing Professional Engineer (PE) with the information or refresher on the subject and provide for the engineer assigned to a related job with the minimum knowledge to properly evaluate the design and testing of a system.
• Provide a practicing Engineer with the requisite knowledge to adequately review and analyze designs and testing for compliance with goals and requirements.
• Provide a licensed Electrician with an understanding to be able to assess impacts on systems for installation or design changes, troubleshooting, and proper safe operation.
Focus will be on the basics of knowledge, given that truly understanding the basics helps in maintaining necessary skills, along with the ability to accomplish tasks competently and confidently. Additional information provided will be the basis for greater study, especially for those involved in design.
A list of references will allow one to commence an exploration of items new to the field. All the best.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course I covers the fundamentals of DC motors; different notational methods and symbology; the interaction of revolving and stationary fields; armature reaction and concomitant compensation; all for both series and shunt machines. The course blends the basics with information provided for more indepth study.
Course II covers the fundamentals of AC machines; establishment of rotating magnetic fields; synchronous and induction machines; starting, running, and controlling speed of AC machines; single-phase and multiphase machines; specialty motors with applications. The course blends the basics with information provided for more indepth study.
Course III covers The National Electrical Code as it relates directly or indirectly to AC/DC Motors/Generators with an emphasis on generally applicable requires as well as where to location requirements.
NOTE
Access to any basic theory book (see the References) is helpful but is not required for completion of the course(s).
